The Old Switcheroo
A new baby is the perfect reason to buy a camera, even if that baby isn’t yours.
She’ll never admit this to you, but it was your mother’s idea. I mean, it’s not like we planned it from the beginning or anything. It’s just that you were our first child, you know? And we were so far from home where your grandparents and our friends could get a chance to meet you. We kept getting all these emails and text messages, “Any pictures yet? Where are the pictures of the new little angel?!” The pressure to post photos of you on Facebook was almost crippling. In the end, we didn’t really have a choice. We did what we did because we felt like we had to, for their sakes. That and, well, you were kind of an ugly little cuss.
So we hired a stunt baby off of Craig’s List.
I’m not proud. Neither is your mother. But for the first ten months of your life, the part of you was played by a young lady named Caroline. All those high-resolution shots of you coming home from the hospital, lying in your bassinette, and being held lovingly by both your mother and I? That’s all Caroline, all taken with our Panasonic 14.1MP Digital Camera with Leica 16x Optical Zoom. Yes, even the beautifully detailed, crisp and vivid movies in 1080p and Dolby Sound of you cooing at your mobile and splashing in your little tub at bath time. And for that, we are sorry.
But you have to understand, we were desperate! We knew you’d, you know, fill out or whatever and get cute eventually, but we just didn’t have that kind of time! We needed a baby we could take to the zoo and not scare the animals away so that we could geo-tag photos with the built-in GPS function! She was cute, fairly affordable, and, more than anything, she made so many people so happy when they saw her darling face. And besides, that’s all in the past now. I mean, just look at you! You’re so much more attractive now. In your own special way.
Well, as a matter of fact, we did take several shots of you and not the stunt baby. They happen to be on the 4GB SD Card that came with the camera. Where? Um, well, it’s in a lockbox. In a safe. In a small town in Montana. With explicit instructions that no one but you ever views the contents of it ever and only after you’ve turned 30. But you know what? Let’s try to move past your ug… I MEAN, this ugliness for now and watch that video of Caroline crawling for the first time. Isn’t she a sweetie?
