Attention all moms

New slang update! Stay “hep” to your kids’ “fresh” “lingo!”

If you’re like most of us, you’ve probably experienced the fear, confusion, disorientation, and panic associated with exposure to unfamiliar slang. These feelings are normal. In fact, studies reveal that one of the principal purposes of slang is to exclude certain groups from the conversations in which it is used!

Fortunately, we at the National Argot Revelation Cooperative, or NARC, employ a staff of dozens of hardworking translators who pose as “hip” young people online, participating in their strange and inscrutable culture, and unlocking the secrets of their bizarre language for “squares” like you. Here are just a few of the fascinating recent discoveries they’ve made!

01. “Crunk”
Now in common use, this term originated with underground dance groups like “The Black-Eye Peas” and “The Pussycat Girls.” It means drunk on a new kind of alcohol marketed directly to teens. It’s called “For Lokoo,” and it has actual crack cocaine in it.

02. “Vizio”
In family dens and basement rumpus rooms around America, kids are asking each other “what’s the vizzy, yo?” Derived from the brand name of a popular high-definition LCD television, this expression essentially means “what’s on TV?” Don’t use it in front of lesser screens, though, because “what’s the vizzy, yo?” implies the program will be watched in 720p HD, with SRS TruSurround immersive audio and a comfortably wide viewing angle.

03. “You guys are so lame, it’s obvious you are old people posing as kids”
Our field researchers came across this phrase (and variations on it) over and over again! It is apparently a compliment, meant to praise a peer’s “coolness.” While it does sort of read like an insult to those of us who came of age during a less sarcastic time, it’s important to remember that kids often say the opposite of what they mean. You know, like how “bad” means “good” to them. See?
