Stan Killjoy, Sick Day Detective
There’s a fine line between Personal Time Off and a Sick Day. Me? I’m what you might call the local border patrol.
Irritable bowel syndrome. That’s what I’m thinking about as I watch the children ride round and round on the old Mayfield Carousel. No one knows what causes it, you know. It could be stress, could be diet, could even be a brain disorder. Any number of stimuli can bring it on. People don’t like discussing it in public for obvious reasons, and yet it is one of the most often cited reasons for a usually loyal and productive employee to burn a sick day, right up there with migraines and food poisoning.
I’m also thinking about what a shame it would be to have such an awful affliction on a day like today. The sun’s out, the sky’s blue, it’s not too hot or too chilly. You certainly wouldn’t want to be doubled over with abdominal cramping and whatnot on an afternoon like this one, no sir. You’d have to be a pretty brave man to brave that kind of intestinal distress and take your kids out for fun and play.
Take this guy I’m recording on my Toshiba CAMILEO 1080p Camcorder right now. His name’s George. He’s a nice guy and obviously loves his kids as you might be able to tell by the two funnel cakes he’s holding for when they get off the merry-go-round. I’ve been capturing 1080p full high-definition video of this guy all day, using the 16x digital zoom when they all rode the Ferris wheel, taking 16MP interpolated still shots when they were standing in line for the mini roller coaster. Not once has he shown any kind of symptom related to irritable bowel syndrome in the several hours he’s been at this amusement park. Which, you know, is incredible because that’s what he told his boss this morning when he called in.
Maybe he’s just trying to stay strong for his kids and give them a nice time. Who knows? Not me. His company didn’t pay me to ask. They did, however, hire me to bring back evidence that our boy George here may not be as sick as he claims. I suppose when they download the footage via USB, take it off the SDXC card, or just plug my camcorder up to an HDTV through the built-in mini HDMI® port and show it to George in his job’s HR department, they’ll get that all sorted out.
I sure hope for his sake stress is not a trigger for his IBS, though, because I’ve got a feeling he’ll be in for a lot of it in the near future.
