The pitfalls of genius.

When you spend all your time perfecting your product, the business side of things sometimes suffers.

Poor, poor Kodak. First they discontinued the films, then came bankruptcy, and before too long even the cameras were discontinued. Which is kind of ironic, because by a lot of accounts they finally got the digital camera right with this 16 MP Easyshare Z5120 Point and Shoot Camera. Seriously. We’re no stranger to discount cameras, and this one’s a step above.

You’ve got a 26X optical zoom, 26mm wide-angle lens, 3” LCD screen, and on-camera video and picture editing. Did you hear us? TWENTY. SIX. TIME. ZOOM. That’s INSANE! You’re going to be zooming in on MOON ROCKS and junk. Then there’s a nifty share button that instantly uploads your photos and video to Facebook, an email client, or your kodak digital picture frame (also discontinued) with the push of a button while synced to your computer. Or go one further and buy yourself an Eye-Fi wireless memory card and share from almost anywhere! It’s got Smart Capture Technology and blur reduction, for a great picture in any environment, and Face Recognition to help you save and tag up to 20 of your favorite photo subjects instantly.

It’s a sweet camera.

So they must’ve spent a lot of time on it, and maybe not so much time fine-tuning the business model or watching the finances or, y’know, being profitable. So now the gamble for you, the consumer, is: do you want to buy a REALLY nice point-and-shoot camera that’s the last of its brand and might not have much tech support after you buy it? Don’t get us wrong, it comes with a 1-year warranty to cover anything unusual and, well, when’s the last time you dialed up tech support for a point-and-shoot camera anyway? Isn’t that kind of the point (sorry) of a point-and-shoot? No muss, no fuss, just point. And Shoot.

Plus, if you’re lucky a few dedicated weirdos will decide in a few years that the Kodak Easyshare Z5120 is a collectors’ item. And THEN who knows what it’ll be worth?! You could be sitting on an eBay goldmine! But if not, you’ve at least got a sweet camera.
