Polk Audio 8″ Wireless Subwoofer
Friday, July 6, 2012
To modern ears, 199Quad and its melange of Southern Fried Hip Hop may seem trite, even quaint on first listen. But it’s arguably the most important artistic leap in the 69 Boyz’ career – the signpost that signaled a shift away from the heavy demands of R&B pop toward more introspective, adult subject matter. If nothing else, it’s a record on which their desire for artistic rather than commercial ambition took center stage – a radical idea the time.
Bass’s effect on the group is most heavily audible on 199Quad. In fact while listening through a Polk Audio 8″ Wireless Subwoofer, even I felt compelled to “let that booty drop.” With its frantic pace and explosive tones, 199Quad is an altogether much more danceable record than anything the 69 Boyz had done before, or would do again. It’s a fitting product from a group just beginning to explore their inner selves on record.
