Amanda was never really a fan of his music. Until recently, she’d never purchased any of his albums or played any of his music in the car. When others would drunkenly sing his songs as they played from a bar jukebox, Amanda would just smile and sway along, hoping that whoever chose the track hadn’t decided to play five or six of his greatest hits in a row.
But as she tucked Mackenzie in for bed, she made her silently nightly vow to hug Neil Diamond as hard as she could for everything he’d done for her.
“Is it time, Mommy? Is it time?” Mackenzie bounced up and down in bed, clutching her MOBI TykeLight GloMate in her hands as its rainbow colors cycled.
Amanda put a finger to her lips. “Hmm. Let’s see. Your teeth are brushed, right?”
Mackenzie smiled widely, showing off her freshly cleaned chompers.
“Good. Looks like your WallMate night light is plugged in, too. Have you got your glass of water? Have you checked under the bed and in the closet for monsters?”
“Yes, Mommy, yes!”
Amanda shook her head. “I don’t know. You look like you could use at least one more story before bed.”
“No, Mommy, I don’t need another story!” She held out the soft TykeLight and waved it toward her mother. “Do the song! Do the song!”
Amanda grinned as she took the portable night light from Mackenzie. She walked over to the small CD player in her bedroom, pressed play, and turned out the light so that all that glowed was the MOBI TykeLight WallMate Night Light on her wall and the GloMate she held as she waited for the music to start.
She knew things Mackenzie was having a hard time adjusting to having Gavin take up so much her attention. Things hadn’t been easy on either of them since… Well, there was no use dwelling on the past. “Heartlight” was about to start, and if it made her little girl happy to watch her lip-synch to it in the dark before bedtime, she was going to give each nightly performance her all.
