Tim put a hand on his son’s shoulder as they stared out into the yard. “You know,” he said, “something like three-quarters of the country are under extreme drought conditions. In a way, we’re pretty lucky.”

Jake shrugged, the inner tube he was wearing around his neck rubbing against the sliding glass door and squeaking as he did.

“And seriously, the weather people on TV are wrong like eighty percent of the time. There’s no way it could rain all week.”

Jake stared at the Toss Across Splash Game sitting in the yard and sighed. Today was the day he was going to beat Olivia at Tic-Tac-Toe as it floated around the pool on its foam pads. He’d been developing his bean bag throwing skills all summer long to do just that and be declared Master of the Splash Game. Nature, however, had made other plans.

“Come on, buddy. Don’t be so down. There’ll be more chances to go swimming.”

“What about school?” Jake said, watching raindrop bounce against the blue and yellow plastic.. “It starts in just a few weeks. And then it’ll be stupid Fall.”

Tim nodded. “Yeah, I guess you’re right. Time’s running out, I suppose.” He crossed his arms and thought for a moment, then said, “I guess that means we should see if that Splash Game thing will float in the kiddy pool we’ve got in the basement before your mom gets home.”

Jake smiled and rested his head against his father’s hip with another inner tube squeak. “You’re the best, Dad.”
