Lock & Lock Square Lunch Box Set
Monday, August 13, 2012
Jake had to think really hard about Michelle’s question. “What do you want for lunch on the first day of school?” wasn’t something a guy could just answer off the top of his head. There was a lot going on there!
For example, if Jake told his mom he wanted her to fill his Lock & Lock insulated carrying bag with, say, a salami sandwich… who would he end up sitting next to? One of the kids who had a strict vegan diet? Then they’d cover their noses at the meat smell, and he’d be known as “Smelly Jake” for the rest of the year. Nobody would even remember why.
Or what if he decided on peanut butter? His Lock & Lock passed all leakage tests so it wouldn’t spill anything, but when the teacher came over and told him about Leo’s peanut allergy, he’d have to sit outside and eat by himself… and then he’d have a reputation as a loner! Everybody would just ignore him and say he was stand-offish, and before long, he’d have no friends at all. These were the things Michelle never considered, because she was a mom, and moms never thought about the repercussions of their actions.
Even junk foods like pizza and marshmallow sandwiches, assuming Michelle would allow them, had their own problems. A kid with pizza was marked as being too cool, and hated for being different. A kid with a marshmallow sandwich was too weird, and hated for being different. There wasn’t even really an answer, as far as Jake could see, because if he didn’t bring a lunch he would TOTALLY be hated for being different. He sat down on the kitchen floor with an angry huff. How could he explain all that to Michelle?
“I saw Peter’s Mom at the grocery store, you know. She was buying him turkey and swiss, on wheat bread. This turkey-” she tapped the bag “-and this swiss-” she tapped the bag “-and this bread.”
Jake looked a little cautious. “So… Peter and I would have the same lunch?”
“That’s right.”
Jake let out another sigh. “Mom, that’s AWFUL! They’ll call us TWINS! It’s like you don’t even know how tough school is these days!”
Jake stormed out to the pool to think. Michelle put the Lock & Lock Lunch Box into the dishwasher. She was pretty sure that the first day of school wasn’t going to be anywhere near as bad as Jake was planning for… but just in case, she’d be asking a few more mothers if their kids liked turkey and swiss.
