Record-A-Story Book

Olivia looked twice at her father as she got out of the car. She answered his goodbye with “And you have a good day at work, okay?” Tim knew she’d noticed his droopy face in the mornings, and made a mental note to leave the trouble at the office from now on.
As he pulled into the parking space, Tim noticed the book sitting on top of his coat. His first thought was selfish: I can’t believe I have to go back and give her this stupid book. But then he saw his daughter’s hand written note: Open This! I <3 You, Dad! And it struck him that she’d left this Record-A-Story book on purpose. For him.
Tim opened the cover to the first “spread” of 16 pages. There were eight “spreads” that each could hold 96 seconds of audio. Tim’s co-workers passed by the car windows as he listened to his daughter’s voice.
Hi, Daddy, I’m just getting ready for school, and I know you’ve been really worried lately. I guess it’s a lot like what I feel going back to school every day. There’s all kinds of things I know and want to do, and there’s always someone who doesn’t want to let me do it that way. And I know a bunch of times, I don’t want to even get up. But every morning you knock on my door and make me do it anyway, and when you drive me to school… like, I don’t WANT to be there, but I like that you take me, because I know it means you love me. And I’m sorry that I can’t drop you off, because I think you need someone to tell you to have a nice day as well. So I took Ella’s Record-A-Story book to leave you a message so you’d know. Oh, and if I get downstairs before you do, I’m also going to hide a cupcake in your jacket, so don’t sit on it. I love you, Daddy. Have a good day at work, and remember I love you. And so does everybody else.
Tim found the cheap pre-wrapped cupcake in his jacket pocket. He closed the Record-A-Book. Then he opened it again, and listened one more time. He used the lock feature to make sure he couldn’t delete it by accident. Later, he’d buy Ella another Record-A-Book so she wouldn’t miss this one. Which he was keeping. For the rest of his life.
