Tim hung up just as Michelle’s recorded voice was about to tell him she was unavailable to take his call and invite him to leave a message, for the third time. Crud, he thought, staring down at the two activity bundles before him. Looks like I’m going in blind on this one.

He put his phone back in his pocket and fished out the birthday party invitation that had been sitting in Ella’s daycare cubby. “Come celebrate Jayden’s special day!” it read in big red letters surrounded by drawings of balloons, confetti, and hats. No unicorns. No baseballs. No princesses. No spaceships. Just the name Jayden, and he couldn’t for the life of him remember what pronoun Michelle had used when she told him about it.

Tim thought hard about what to do next. If he bought the Melissa & Doug Blue Activity Bundle, with its Alphabet and Numbers and Character sticker books, Jayden would probably turn out to be a young lady and her family might be offended. If he grabbed the Pink Bundle containing Fashion, Animal, and other girl-themed stickers, Jayden would be a boy, and his dad might want to pick a fight. UGH.

Tim looked at his watch. He’d spent an hour trying to figure this silly present out, and it wasn’t even for one of his kids. He pursed his lips and decided that he’d buy the first thing that came to mind.

The first thing that came to mind was a cherry slushie from the store cafe.

Tim shrugged and threw both bundles in the cart. He’d work out the Jayden problem later.
