Smoke Alarm or CO & Natural Gas Alarm
Wednesday, September 5, 2012
Nestoras stood in the middle of Sylvia’s empty apartment. He was shocked, but he was also sad. He had finally admitted to his feelings for Sylvia, and now it was too late to do anything about it. Where could she have possibly gone? Why had she left in such haste? How did he not even notice she had moved out? She must have done it under the cover of night. That was the only answer.
As he walked around bewildered, he heard a sporadic and faint “BEEP” coming from somewhere. The first thing he did was check the smoke and fire alarm. He shut it off and then turned it back on so the self-diagnostics feature could perform a status check, and it appeared to be functioning properly.
So the next thing he did was look inside every cabinet and drawer, but they were all empty. Then he looked inside every closet. Also empty. It took him 15 minutes to triangulate the source of the beeping by process of elimination. It was coming from somewhere in the bathroom.
After looking in the shower and under the sink, there was only one more place it could be. Nestoras lifted up the porcelain cover on the back of the toilet. There, taped inside the tank was a USI Carbon Monoxide and Natural Gas alarm.
Understandably perplexed, Nestoras untaped the device and turned it over in his hands several times. The beeping was the low battery indicator. He slid open the battery casing and noticed that there was a small piece of paper folded up inside.
With his hands shaking, he removed the piece of paper and unfolded it. Written on it in what looked like Sylvia’s shade of lipstick was one single word:
“YAM”
