Mike took one last look at his glass-blown ornament creations before wrapping them up in tissue paper and storing them away in the closet. His granddaughter was absolutely going to love their bright, swirly designs. He thought for a moment about her sweet little smile and imagined how she’d excitedly squeal, “Papa!” and hug him tightly around the neck when he gave them to her. But first, he had a matter to attend to.

Lesley had broken into his apartment, and he didn’t take too kindly to the intrusion. So he thought he’d return the favor. He dressed from head to toe in black and slipped the ski mask down over his face. It took him only seconds to pick the lock to Brant and Lesley’s apartment, just as he had at Pamela’s the night he saved the building from future culinary catastrophes. He was sloppy that night and nearly got caught, a mistake he was sure he wouldn’t make again. Until it happened.

As he pushed the door open slowly, he noticed immediately that the aroma of fresh-baked confections permeated the air. It was 2:30 in the morning, but Lesley was in the kitchen in an oversized t-shirt, carefully removing cookies from her 15″ Cuisinart baking sheet. A 17″ baking sheet sat right next to it with perfectly formed balls of raw cookie dough ready for the oven.

The oven timer beeped. Lesley put on her mitts and removed the pan holding 12 of the most perfectly formed muffins Mike had ever seen. She turned around to set them on the counter, and that’s when she saw him. Mike heard the breath catch in her throat.

Lesley stood completely still for a few moments, wide-eyed and paralyzed with fear. Mike made a sudden start in her direction, and she screeched and threw the pan at his head. The muffins released easily from the non-stick surface, and Mike was glad he had the ski mask to protect his face from the molten hot blueberries.

When she saw the corners of Mike’s mouth curl into a smile, she started screaming at the top of her lungs and chucking anything at him she could get her hands on, including the two 9″ round cake pans she had already greased and floured.

He ducked them easily and moved fast towards her. With nowhere to go, she crouched low and covered her eyes. Mike was fingertips away when he felt the heavy gauge aluminized steel of the 9″ square cake pan slam down hard against the back of his head.

Lesley opened her eyes just as he slumped to the floor. Raoul stood directly above him, still clutching the cake pan. She squealed with relief, jumped into his arms and buried her head into his shoulder.

Just then, Brant emerged from the bedroom with Nameless Puppy in tow, still half asleep and very confused.
