Nestoras’ luggage was packed and stowed. His boxes were somewhere below, in the freight. Maybe a sea journey was a little more expensive, but to him, it was worth it. He had always loved the sea. And now, here, on the docks, his journey was about to begin.

“You always loved dat sea,” said Solomon. Solomon had recently picked up a strange New Jersey-sort of accent. No one was sure how or why, and Nestoras found himself sad that he’d miss out on watching it develop.

“We gotcha dis,” said Solomon, handing Nestoras a Dream Spa 30-Setting Slide Bar Shower Head. “It raises and lowas. Got like thirty settings or somethin’. I think they counted weird so that’s a little unfair but it’s still a good handle.”

“When he said ‘lowas’ he means ‘lowers’ in case you can’t tell.” Hank just wanted something to say, so he said the obvious. Nestoras could see him trying not to tear up. Nestoras nodded. He and Hank had always been close. Even when they fought, they fought like brothers.

“You’ll write,” said Giovanni, “won’t you?”

“Ah, ya mudder, c’mere.” Solomon took Nestoras into a big bear hug. “You keep clean, huh? You best keep clean!”

Nestoras promised he would. And then, with nothing but his Dream Spa 30-Setting Slide Bar Shower Head and a small case for the voyage, Nestoras walked up the gangplank, walked to his cabin, closed the door, and lay on the bed. Outside, he could see the water.

Nestoras decided he wouldn’t miss them at all.
