Nestoras was taking the Reston Lloyd PrepCo Bake Porter 6-Cup Jumbo Muffin Pan out of the oven when the oven mitt slipped and he singed his hand on the edge. He instinctively retracted, and the perfectly baked carrot cake muffins tumbled to the ground.

He was going to surprise Sylvia with the sweet treats and finally ask her, once and for all, if she would like to go to the movies with him. Perhaps even enjoy a meal. Together. At the same table. Eating food. A real official date. But now his courage was nothing but a steaming pile of crumbled dreams.

To Nestoras, Sylvia was the moon and he was the tide. Wherever she commanded, he would go. Whatever she insisted, he would do. Just as long as whatever she commanded and insisted didn’t have to happen on a Monday. Monday was poker night with the guys.

Who did he think he was kidding, anyway? He was like a lowly, unusually sweaty peasant. And Sylvia was like a Greek goddess. Albeit, a foul-mouth chain-smoking goddess. And come to think of it, not really Greek at all. If he had to guess, he’d say probably more like English or German descent, possibly Irish. But that was neither here nor there. Anyway, it was all over before it started. His window of opportunity ended when those muffins hit the floor.

But wait! He still had a 100% melamine rectangular pan and a lid with 100% silicone corners and Yia-Yia’s 100% fool-proof baklava recipe. It was a bold move, but he had a feeling if he showed up with those delicate layers of phyllo dough pastry, spiced nuts and honey in that pan with the clip-on easy-transport lid, there’s no way she could say no.

And besides, if she did, he could just tell the landlord to jack up her rent.
