Tickets, Please

I’ve been playing skee-ball here for over fifty years, kid. I think I deserve a little more than a big stuffed animal.

You see that old photo on the wall there behind you, kid? That little boy shaking that old man’s hand is me. That’s right. I was first in line when Ralph, the original owner, first opened up this little outdoor arcade of his. First to pick a lane, first to insert a coin, first to roll one of those wooden balls into the 50 point hole, first skee-ball champion of this great state, that’s me. Since then, I’ve seen this place trade hands more times than I care to count, but I’ve always been here, rollin’ away and rackin’ up the points.

But I’m old now. I’m tired. Skee-ball ain’t the same game it used to be. The points are higher, the prices even more so, and the tickets are more scarce than they ever were. It’s time for me to bow out and let a new generation take over. But if you think some snot-nosed, cracking-voiced punk is gonna tell me I can’t turn in my tickets today, you’ve got another thing coming, young man. I’m not leaving this arcade without that Asus 15.6” HD LED Laptop with WiMax you’ve got on the top shelf. That’s right. The one with the sign that says “4.5 million tickets” next to it.

See, my grandkids have been telling me I need a computer for a while now. I figure that Intel® Core™ i3-370M Processor 2.4GHz and Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium 64-bit operating system in that one will do me just fine. I’m sure the old photos I have winning the Tri-County Skee-Ball Championships of ‘59-’74 will look real nice on the 15.6” LED-backlit high-definition widescreen display with 1366 x 768 resolution, too. It’s got a nice big 500GB hard drive, too, not to mention I’ll be able to look for other skee-ball aficionados like me online thanks to the Intel’s advanced WiMAX and Wi-Fi combo adapter. Should make easing into “retirement” a breeze.

Now then, you better get cracking, kid. I’ve got the first ten boxes here on this dolly, and two full moving trucks full of boxes in the parking lot. And say, if you don’t mind, I think I’ll play a few rounds on my old lane. You know, just for old time’s sake.
