Craig sighed, then picked up the phone and dialed.

“Hi Lisa, it’s Craig. Listen, I don’t think I’m going to make that coffee date today. I’m really sorry. I think you’re awesome and I’d like to hang out but I’ve got some pretty serious family stuff going on right now and I guess I’m just not up to it. I’m really sorry. I’m sure this means I totally blew it and I’ll never get another chance. I mean, I hope that’s not the case, but if it is, I understand. OK. Well, that’s all I guess. Take care.”

Craig set the phone down next to him on the couch. He hadn’t moved from that spot in almost a day. He was emotionally drained after the recent events with his mom and dad. It would get better, he knew. It would just take time.

A few hours passed. He watched the sun make its way across the sky. He was just about to drift off when there was a knock at the door.

He got up and shuffled across the room to see who it was through the peep hole. His heart stopped.

“Hi there,” said Lisa when he opened the door. She was carrying a Breville Coffee Maker, a bag of whole beans and two mugs. “I just figured, if you wouldn’t come to coffee, I’d bring coffee to you.”

Craig smiled for the first time in a while, and opened the door wider to let her in.

For the rest of the night, they talked about coffee, the glory of built-in burr grinders and how letting it steep for four minutes before drinking is similar to a French Press process. But mostly they just sat together in silence, slowly sipping the single cup servings they had selected over the larger carafe option.

It was the best first date either of them had ever had, and also the last. Craig and Lisa were married two years later. Jimmy was Best Man. Maurice cried.
