He’s never tasted pickles before. Nor stewed tomatoes, nor star-shaped spaghetti and meatballs. He’s heard great things about tomato soup, preserves, and mayonnaise, but has never experienced them himself to know.

Yet, these things and many others like them line shelves on the walls of his kitchen and living room, contained inside jars and cans and bottles. “They make for nice decorations,” he tells people who came over. And it’s true; they give his apartment a certain charm. But the truth is he didn’t buy them for decoration. He bought them to eat, but being unable to open the jars and fearing the sharp edges of the cans’ lids, he shelved them instead.

Now, though, he’s found this Kuhn Rikon Can and Jar Opener Set. Finally, the food will be free! But is that what he really wants? Is the delicious taste of corn chowder and raspberry jam worth stark walls and empty shelves?
