“Abigail! Have you seen my towel? I could have sworn I set it right here before I got into the bath.”

“I haven’t the slightest idea where it is, John. But that’s the seventh towel that’s gone missing this week.”

“Perhaps that peculiar new houseguest of ours might know something about it. What was her name? Cynthia?”

“Cyndee, dear. Among her many other odd habits – why, just this morning she left the house to run, not to flee danger or reach a destination, but for an obscure purpose she simply called ‘cardio’ –  she has indeed shown an inordinate fascination with our towels.”

“You don’t say.”

“Yes. And yesterday, she told me she thought the residents of her native city would pay handsomely for towels such as ours.”

“What city was that, dear?”

“Someplace called Too-San. She said it was in America, but the name sounded rather Oriental to my ear.”

“Hmm. A Celestial trading post, I’ll wager. We should find this Cyndee at once. I grow ever more certain that she has spirited away our towels to peddle to the scheming merchants of distant Too-San. When did you see Cyndee last?”

“Just moments ago. She was climbing into a strange sort of land-boat, or a carriage without horses – which then vanished in a flash of lightning and an acrid, stinking gust of cloud.”

“And you didn’t think to mention this witchcraft to me before?”

“Well, you started talking about the towels.”
