“Well THAT was a disaster.” Sylvia placed the last of the three one-gallon containers of curry chicken salad on her counter and huffed. “I swear, I try to add a little variety to the food at these Fourth of July charity events, and everyone asks where the bratwursts and burgers are! I tell you, people have no sense of culinary adventure, Craig.”

Craig nodded from his seat at Sylvia’s kitchen table and mumbled something that vaguely sounded like agreement through the chicken salad he’d been shoveling into his mouth.

“I mean, it’s like no one appreciates the trouble I had to go through finding a caterer, talking their price down, and having it all delivered to the party all by myself. It was exhausting work! And when the bread came un-sliced, I thought I was going to die of embarrassment right then and there, Craigy-Bear. Dreadful. It was just dreadful. Here I thought we were celebrating America’s adventurous spirit and diversity and instead we were lauding bland mustard potato salad and animal by-products. And raising money for cancer research, of course.”

Once again, Craig nodded. He was pretty committed to letting his aunt rant as much as she wanted, just as long as she let him eat as much as he wanted.

“Well, at least the folks down at the homeless shelter were appreciative of everything I put into this. Thank you for helping me take all that down there. I figure I’ll split up the rest between you and Pamela. You should have plenty to take home with you.”

Craig gave Sylvia a thumbs up and scooped a little more food into his bowl. Man, what’d they put in this stuff? It was friggin’ DELICIOUS.

“Which reminds me, Craig, can you do me a favor when you leave? I had to borrow this Kuhn Rikon Cutlery Set from a neighbor when it turned out the bread wasn’t cut. Granted, the Chef’s Knife, Paring Knife, and Mini Cleaver Knife weren’t exactly the best for the job, and Lord knows I’m going to hear about this giraffe-printing, but beggars can’t be choosers. Besides, the super sharp Japanese high carbon stainless steel and non-stick coating worked in a pinch, that’s what’s important. Anyway, I told Danielle I have them back to her by…”

An explosion of curry chicken salad erupted from Craig’s mouth. He quickly covered his mouth with his napkin and then looked up at his aunt. She gazed at the mess in mute horror until she finally said, “I’m sorry, dear, but was that a ‘yes’ or a ‘no?'”
