Why Pernicia Malcott had, in her cabin, nearly one hundred thousand dollars in cash was simple enough: the recent passing of a distant uncle had made her very wealthy, and since it was wealth that had befallen her suddenly and unexpectedly, she felt no particular attachment to it, leading her to show it off and throw it around without much care.

What was of more concern was who killed Pernicia and where they’d hid the money.

It was a cruise, after all, and a private cruise at that. Pernicia had organized it herself, inviting only four of her closest friends. there was Robert, the successful restauranteur; Arthur, the academic; Lorette, the painter; and Isabelle, the theater actress. Beyond them, the captain and the cook: a husband and wife.

These were the only people who had been aboard when the boat left the harbor, and so they were the only suspects Inspector Marceau, who’d arrived in a dinghy the morning after the murder, had to consider. Marceau spoke first to the two crew members and was able to rule them out immediately. He’d met many murderers in his day, and they just weren’t the type.

And, interestingly enough, they were the only ones who weren’t the type. The remaining four passengers – Pernicia’s supposed friends – each had a motive, and each was oozing with guilt. Robert was currently entangled in a controversy involving contaminated meat in his flagship steakhouse and could certainly use some money to get out of it; Arthur had been passed over for tenure at the small liberal arts college where he had taught and had yet to secure a new position for the fall; Lorette had recently attended a sculpture exhibit after having a few too many glasses of wine and ended up knocking over and destroying several expensive pieces; and Isabelle was in hot water for directing a show without paying for the rights.

None of them seemed to be the clear lead suspect; in fact, Marceau suspected them all of working together. Yet, there were no finger prints, no murder weapon, and no trace of the money. In each cabin, he saw nothing out of the ordinary aside from the fact that each guest had packed several excessively wrinkled garments.

That night, he lay awake on the cot the captain had set up for him in the kitchen, unable to piece things together. He decided to take his mind off the case. Never the one to look unprofessional, he’d brought his Haan Pro Garment Steamer.
