Nestoras knew it was wrong, and maybe even illegal. But he was willing to risk the possibility of a breaking and entering charge to make sure Sylvia was OK.
He turned on the micro flashlight to illuminate the door handle while he worked. Sure, he could have just used his key to get in. But this way, if he got caught and people started asking questions, he could just say that he was fixing the lock.
Nestoras quickly removed all the screws with the micro driver drill, which was the perfect size for working in such a tight spot and at an awkward angle. He would replace them later with the micro impact driver, though it was a bit overkill since it was designed to tighten carriage bolts and sink deck screws.
He jiggled the loose handle and it slipped off into his hand. On the other side of the door, he heard the other half hit the ground with a thunk. If he wanted to, he could peer straight through the hole in the door where the knob had been and into Sylvia’s apartment, but he paused for a moment to work up the courage. He hadn’t seen her for weeks, and he was afraid of what he might find.
Finally, he took a deep breath and pushed the door open. What he saw was a bigger shock than anything he could have imagined.
The place was completely empty. No cigarette butts. No furniture. No Sylvia.
