A Cautionary Tale

Well I guess you laptop computers have finally got us old typewriters on the ropes. I hope you’re happy.

Go ahead. Enjoy your little victory. It must feel really good to make us old workhorses darn near extinct. After all, no one needs ink ribbons, touch control, or even paper anymore. Heck, I reckon you might as well load us all onto a boat and send us down the river of the Past, never to be seen or heard from again. I bet you all get awful giddy just thinking of the prospect, don’t you?

But before you all start congratulating yourselves too much, lemme just say something real quick. Don’t worry. This won’t take long. I’ll just say my piece and shuffle off into history.

Watch your backs, fellas.

You see, you might be all the new kings of Typing Mountain with your whiz-bang 15.6” diagonal High-Definition HP BrightView LED displays, and your 3GB DDR2 of “system memory” or whatever it’s called. You can crow all day long about your integrated microphones and Wi-Fi antenna, or boast about the speed of your 2.2GHz Intel processor. Heh, me and mine used to do the same thing when we all got all electronic and correctable. But I’m here to tell you, big 250GB hard drives and 6-cell lithium-ion battery might tickle the public’s fancy now, but there’s always something waiting patiently in the wings for its turn as the new toast of the town.

I’m sorry. Guess I picked up a bit of a cough. Must be my advanced age.

Anyway, I guess I’ll get going. Figure I’ll try my luck with some of those artist folks that like to make sculptures using obsolete technology. Who knows? Maybe we’ll see each other again one day. Heh heh.
