Of course Craig was worried about Sylvia in the summer heat. She had an air conditioner in her window, but she didn’t seem to want to turn it on. Said something about “making it seem like no one was home” for some reason. Craig knew his aunt was sharp as a tack, but little moments like that? They made him start to worry.

So he picked up a PalmAire Cool Indoor Misting Fan and drove it over, knowing that the cooling and misting effect from the 48 ounce tank would provide almost nine hours of cooling mist, most likely helping her avoid any strange heat-related brain issues. He also picked up some food and a few magazines, in hopes that maybe she’d get the idea there was still a world waiting for her. A person just couldn’t spend their whole life hiding away. Especially not someone as wonderful as his Aunt Sylvia! Craig was sure she’d never done anything to anyone!

At the downstairs buzzer, he tapped Pamela’s apartment. No answer. He tried Nestoras’ button. No answer. He considered trying Aunt Sylvia’s apartment but she certainly wouldn’t answer this time either. “Knock on the door six times, slowly.” she’d said on his last visit. “That way I’ll know it’s you, and can let you in.”

Finally Craig just gave up, and flat-palmed all the buttons. Surely someone would let him in!

The tinny speaker replied: Yeah?

“Hi!” yelled Craig. “I’m Craig, I’m Sylvia’s nephew. I’m bringing her lunch and a PalmAire Cool Indoor Misting Fan, can you let me in?”

Hi, Craig! said the tinny voice. Sylvia mentions you all the time, I’ve been dying to meet you! I don’t know how we’ve missed each other for so long! Hang on, I’ll run down and let you in myself.

Craig wasn’t sure who was coming, because the speaker was just so cheap he couldn’t even tell. Maybe that rich lady Aunt Sylvia always complained about? Or Margaret in 3A? At least the lunch wasn’t going to get cold. Craig figured the traffic would be murder, so he bought sandwiches and chips. Nothing fancy, just a little something so he’d know his aunt was safe. As soon as whoever this was made it down the elevator, and he set up the PalmAire Cool Indoor Misting Fan, he’d run back down to the corner store and buy drinks, and then he and Aunt Sylvia would have a little indoor picnic in the middle of her living room, with a nice cooling breeze, with just a hint of water. He’d pretend he was at the lake, and maybe that would make her laugh, and-

And then Craig couldn’t really think of what he had been thinking about. Because, right in front of him, opening the door…

“Oh, wow!” she said, covering her mouth. Then she laughed and held out her hand. “I guess we have already met, then! But let’s make it official. You’re Craig. And I’m Danielle.”
