I got my dad this JVC Everio HM50 HD Camcorder for Father’s Day this year, and ever since he has absolutely revolutionized the world of cutting-edge experimental videography. His shaky, over-zoomed shots of backyard fauna, accidental recordings of bare rooms, and constant heavy-breathing audio overlays have resonated deeply in the online art-house video community.
The camera is capable of shooting in full HD 720p video, but my dad somehow managed to reduce the resolution to 180×90 in the settings menu. When he posts on Vimeo, everything has this pixelated, discomfiting quality that the North Brooklyn crowd really laps up. And it has image stabilization built-in, but again my dad somehow managed to turn it off in his random menu navigation, and the full stomach-wrenching shakiness of his hand-held videos shines through, “Like a gestalt overture to suffering” -The New York Times.
His most celebrated video is probably “Karen!”, in which he accidentally leaves the camera running while he watches the Women’s finals of the Australian Open tennis tournament, and calling for my mother (Karen) over and over again. At the end it is revealed that my mom was not in the house at all, but had gone to her women’s group meeting two hours earlier. It currently has 2.2 million views.
