“Michelle, do you have five bucks?” Tim was coming up from the den and Olivia was right behind him, grinning. Michelle folded her arms and waited. Tim knew what that meant. He was going to have to tell her the whole story.
“Okay, okay. I went downstairs to where we keep the KidKraft 2-in-1 Activity Table, and Olivia was down there reading. I wanted to, you know, talk to my daughter-“
“-while I was busy!” Olivia interjected.
“-and so I said something like about how I wasn’t sure what the KidKraft 2-in-1 Activity Table was for. Because I know it’s got a double-sided play board, and it’s got LEGO-compatible blocks and a train set, but I wasn’t sure what the 2-in-1 part was all about.”
“It means there’s storage, dad! You can play, or you can not play! Two. In. One.”
“See, that’s what she said, Michelle, but I said that wasn’t true! I figured the 2-in-1 meant that more than one person could use it at a time.”
Michelle didn’t uncross her arms. “This is a really stupid conversation so far.”
“It’s not stupid!” Tim and Olivia both yelled. Michelle tried not to smile. Olivia really was her father’s daughter sometimes.
“Anyway,” continued Tim, “I said something like-“
“You said the KidKraft 2-in-1 Activity Table only had a limited number of activities, as in, two. And I said you were wrong!”
Michelle was catching on. “And so you bet your daughter five bucks she couldn’t show you another use for the KidKraft 2-in-1 Activity Table.”
“Well… yeah. And then she-“
“-made a blanket fort, right?” Michelle started to find her purse. Tim looked crestfallen.
“How… how did you know that?”
“It only makes sense, Dad,” said Olivia, taking the money. “EVERYbody knows that you can always make a blanket fort out of a table.”
“Don’t worry, sweetie,” Michelle told her husband. “Maybe you can mow the lawn to pay me back.”
