“Dad,” said Ella, straightening her corsage. “I swear to you that if you tell the story I can see you’re about to tell, I’ll find my Melissa & Doug Wooden Food and beat you to death with the six slice toy cake.”

“You’ll protect me, won’t you, Edward?” asked Tim, walking in with the family photo album. Edward looked nervously at Ella, who was glaring at her father.

“Dad. You have a single chance to save this family. Turn around, take that photo away, don’t ruin my prom, and we’ll pretend this never happened.”

Tim chuckled as he sat on the couch and waved Edward over. “C’mon, pal. You’ve got to see this picture.”

In the photo, a smiling young Ella was holding onto her Melissa & Doug Wooden Food and making a sandwich. She had a big grin and there was a little drool on the side of the “bread” that was held to the “vegetables” with velcro. She looked happy.

Teenage Ella was nowhere near as happy.

“Dad. Put. Down. The. Photo. Album.“

Tim patted Edward on the knee and pulled the photo out of its sleeve. “Look at this, Edward.” he said.

On the back side of the photo, in a young girl’s scrawl, written in ball point pen, were the words “TER MITE” and what was probably a heart. Edward wasn’t sure how to react.

“Daddy’s little termite!” Tim laughed, as Ella covered her eyes with both hands. “See? That’s the kind of love a father and daughter share.”

“Mom!” Ella yelled. “MOM! WHY AREN’T YOU IN HERE? WHY CAN’T YOU STOP THIS?“

Tim put his arm around Edward’s shoulder as Ella ran to find her mother. “You know, Edward,” said Tim, “I still have all of that Melissa & Doug Wooden Food Bundle, too. It’s one of my favorite things, because it reminds me of how sweet my little girl is. And, tonight, I’m trusting her… with you.”

Edward swallowed hard. Tim’s smile was perhaps just a bit too cruel.

“I think you’ve caught on, Edward. But just to be clear, this is a piece from the Melissa & Doug Pizza Party playset. And if my little girl isn’t home at or before midnight… guess where it’s gonna go?”
