Sharon was alone in the garage. Just her and the Smurf Trike that her sweet little grandchild loved. The Smurf Trike that defied all rules of grammar and logic. The Smurf Trike that was the bane of Sharon’s existence.Sharon had mostly tried to completely ignore the little blue machine. Ella would always ride it happily, and Jake would yell “Smurf! Smurf! SMURF!” at the top of his lungs, and that was forgivable. But when they were gone, and it was just Sharon? She was too much of an English major to accept the word “Smurf” into her life.

What other language, after all, had no law? Spanish didn’t let an object be both masculine and feminine. German might have long words, but they still constructed by certain concrete rules. But “smurf” didn’t have rules. “Smurf” was just a force of nature. No, strike that, nature had laws. “Smurf” did what it pleased, went where it would, and never did the same thing twice. “Smurf” wasn’t nature. “Smurf” was pure chaos.

Sharon loved her grandchildren, so she would endure the Smurf Trike for them. But secretly, she couldn’t wait for the day they went to college, and she could finally be done with the whole idea of Smurfs once and for all.
