Voltron was just about to unleash a little Blazing Sword justice to one of King Zarkon’s Ro-beasts when the phone rang. Craig rolled his eyes and wondered which of Aunt Sylvia’s appliances was busted as he paused the cartoon and answered the call. “What is it this time? The blender? The toaster oven? A shame your phone isn’t broken.”

The voice that replied was soft, confused, and, while feminine, definitely not Aunt Sylvia’s. “Um, hello? I’m calling about the NatureMill Ultra Composter the flier downstairs says you’re selling. Maybe I dialed wrong.”

“No, wait. You’ve got the right number.” Craig had forgotten all about posting about the composter on his aunt’s building’s community bulletin board. “Sorry, I thought you were someone else.”

“No problem, I guess. So you still have it? I’ve been thinking about starting a small garden on my balcony and I thought maybe this might help.”

“Sure do. Brand new, never-been-used. It’ll make more than enough high nitrogen compost for whatever you’ve got planned, I’m sure. As long as you don’t put in any hard stuff like bones or corn cobs, you can make up to about two gallons of the stuff every two weeks, depending on how much stuff you put in the upper compartment.”

“Sounds good to me. It doesn’t stink, does it? I’ve heard compost is kind of smelly.”

“Oh, um, I think I remember the box saying ‘mild earthy aroma.’ It comes with sawdust pellets and baking soda, though, just in case your nose isn’t quite at the level of hippie your heart is.” Craig chuckled, but didn’t hear the caller giggle at all. Great, he thought. This lady will be a bundle of fun to deal with. “Also, I know the one in the picture isn’t black, but the one I’ve got is. Long story. I hope that’s okay.”

“Yeah, I guess so. I’m definitely interested, but do you mind if I come by and see it? I’m home now, so I can walk down to your unit whenever’s good for you.”

“Uh, well, I don’t actually live in the building. I’ve got a relative who stays there, so I’m just around a lot. If you’re really sure you want it, I can bring it by.”

“No, that’s okay,” the caller said. “my friend and I will come by to take a look at it, if that’s okay. I can’t come by today, but maybe later this week? We’ll call before we come over.”

“Yeah, sure, lemme give you the address. Oh, and what’s your name?”

Craig’s heart stopped the moment the sound hit his ear. “Danielle. My name’s Danielle.”
