There was a lot Brant didn’t know about Lesley. He didn’t know why it took her three hours to get ready to go anywhere. He didn’t know why she teared up at those animal rescue commercials. And he didn’t understand why parallel parking was so hard for her.

He just couldn’t figure out how she could paint the entire wall one color, change her mind and paint it another color, only to decide that she actually preferred the first color.

He never asked why she always made him take off his shoes at the front door, or why she refused to go to bed with dirty dishes in the sink.

He wasn’t sure why, when it was just the two of them, she would laugh loudly and without inhibition, but when there were other people around, she might barely crack a smile. He didn’t get why she tried so hard to be perfect all the time, when some of the most beautiful things about her were her imperfections.

He didn’t understand why she always had to be right, even when she was so obviously wrong … and knew it. He didn’t know why it was that when she said she was fine, it actually meant that she wasn’t. And he had no clue why she was mad at him right now.

But he did know that he loved her. And he knew that she loved pancakes. So as he poured the fresh batter into the hot Nordic Ware 12″ pan and watched as the bubbles formed and then popped on the non-stick pure aluminum surface, he realized that all those other things were just who she was. He smiled. Tomorrow she might yell at him because he ran the pan through the dishwasher instead of hand-washing it. But today they had pancakes. And nothing else mattered.

• Hand wash pan thoroughly
• Dishwashing is not recommended as it will shorten the life of the nonstick surface
• Use moderate heat to obtain the most effective cooking properties and prevent damage to the pan and stove
• Never allow cookware to boil dry or leave pan unattended on a hot burner
• Always use adequate ventilation when cooking
• Do no use metal utensils, scouring pads, or abrasive cleaners; they will scratch the pan’s nonstick surface
