“Phil?”

He looked up from the Highlights magazine when the nurse called his name, a little disappointed that he still had not found the tea cup in the Hidden Pictures.

“Dr. Daniels will see you now.”

He struggled to get up from the toddler-sized chair. His legs had fallen asleep after being shoved up near his shoulders for the last half an hour. But he shook out the kinks and followed her down the hallway to a warmly-furnished room. Dr. Daniels greeted him at the door.

“Hello, Phil. Why don’t you take a seat?”

Phil laid down on the couch and kicked up his feet. “So … how does this work, Doc? I just talk and you tell me what’s wrong with me?”

“Something like that. Actually, why don’t you sit over here? I’m not a big believer in the couch method.”

“Oh, OK,” said Phil as he got up and headed for one of the dark brown faux-leather chairs. He thought it was quite stylish with its brown stitching and rubber wood legs in an espresso finish.

“So tell me, Phil. What’s been bothering you?”

“Well, ” he said as he sat down. The chair was of an average size, but his feet didn’t touch the ground. As he sat with his legs sticking straight out, he noticed how strange this was considering Dr. Daniels was sitting in an identical chair across from him, and appeared to be quite comfortable. “It’s my girlfriend. Ex girlfriend, actually. I think I might still like her, but I’m not sure how she feels. We went out the other day and … well, you know. But now she’s acting all weird about it.”

“Do you want to marry her, Phil?”

“Heck no! Girls are icky!” As soon as it came out of his mouth, he wondered what had possessed him to say it. “I mean, I don’t know. Maybe one day, but not now. I think maybe she somehow knows about this other girl I’ve been seeing and maybe she’s mad. But I don’t want to ask her in case she doesn’t actually know, ya know? She’s kind of a pain anyway. She yells at me for eating candy all the time and she’s always telling me to clean up my room and finish my homework and stuff. Anyway, I don’t know what to do. I’ve been so worried about it that I can’t even get past the water track in Mario Kart 7! So what do you think’s wrong with me, Doc?”

“What I think, Phil …” said Dr. Daniels as he pushed his glasses on top of his head. “… is that you need to grow the eff up.”

Phil was shocked by his candid response.

Dr. Daniels continued, “Seriously! Like OH. MY. GAWD. All you do is sit around and play stupid video games all day long while I’m at work trying to make a better life for US. And did you ever stop for ONE SECOND to consider how this makes ME feel? Huh? HUH? DID YOU?”

Phil awoke with a start and sat straight up in bed. He wiped the sweat from his brow and took a minute to catch his breath. “What a terrible dream,” he thought with a shudder.

He started to wonder if perhaps there was a deeper meaning behind it, but then got distracted by the sound of cartoons coming from the living room TV.

“OOH! Spongebob!” he said as he jumped out of bed and went to the kitchen to pour himself a bowl of Fruity Pebbles.
