Who needs a full 5.1 speaker system when you can get this Philips SoundBar? It has all the immersive audio of a big clunky speaker set in a slim, elegant package. It really goes to show that sometimes less speakers are more.

…Notice anything peculiar about that last sentence? You just gonna let it slide? If you’re a grammar snob the word “less” to describe discrete objects like speakers would stick out like an em dash at an en dash party. And really, while this speaker system provides lush audio at a great price, its real service is as a springboard to berate your friends when they use “fewer” and “less” inappropriately.

Listen, we understand that all languages evolve to fit the needs of the times, but this is a very simple, very clear-cut rule. “We need less sound” “We need fewer sound-producing objects.” One is a continuous amount, the other comes in discrete units. Easy-peasy.

There are those who would seek to do harm to the English language, such as grocery stores that provide “12 Items or Less” lines for grammar scofflaws. But we will stand fast against the onslaught of language decrepitude, and never waver.
