Sylvia puffed until the end of her cigarette burned orange, then shook the match to put out the flame. She loved the sulphur smell that lingered afterwards. It was soothing to her. Some people had chamomile tea. Others had lavender bath salts. Sylvia had freshly extinguished matches.

She tossed her pack of cigarettes into the Snapware Glass Canister and snapped the flip-top lid shut. It was airtight, unlike her alibi from that night. She put her hand to her throbbing forehead, either not noticing or not caring that her lit cigarette was singeing the tips of her bangs.

When reminiscing on past transgressions or difficult situations, people often claim that if they had it to do over again, they wouldn’t change a thing. Sylvia didn’t buy it. If she had it to do over again, she knew exactly what she’d change. Of course, hindsight is 20/20, but her decision would be crystal clear. As clear as the glass of this 3-piece canister set.

But there are no second chances. Not really. There is only moving forward. And sometimes that means never looking back at what you’re leaving behind.
