“I’m just saying,” Reggie said, pushing his ill-fitting glasses up the bridge of his nose, “that at no time in any comic ever published ever has Spidey ridden one of those. It totally goes against fifty years of intricate storytelling.”

Jake adjusted his helmet and rolled his eyes as Pete said, “No one cares, Reggie. No. One.”

“Uh, that’s completely untrue, my friend,” Reggie said with a snort. “If, as you say, ‘no one’ cared, I highly doubt the character of Peter Parker would have endured for so long. By using a transportation device so clearly emblazened with the Spider-man logo on the grip tape, you are doing an injustice to the great writers and artists who have guided his story throughout the years.”

Jake licked his finger then held it up. The wind barely blew against it at all. Jake frowned. He would’ve liked a good tail wind, but the current conditions would have to do. At least the hill was good and steep.

“He’s ridden a scooter, certainly,” Reggie continued. “And a skateboard, most definitely, especially during the rise of the sport’s fame in the early nineties. But while that solid wooden deck with a single kicktail for maneuverability and sturdy, removable two-piece handle bar is, indeed, quite awesome, even Uncle Ben himself would’ve scoffed at…”

“Holy cow, Reggie,” Pete interrupted, “would you shut up? You’re going to break Jake’s concentration. Just stand there are take pictures like we asked you.”

“But… Pete shot Reggie a stern look. Reggie forced a smile and pushed up his glasses again. “Fine, okay, whatever.”

“THANK you.” Pete turned to Jake. “You ready, buddy?”

Jake could barely hear Pete over the imagined applause in his head. He pushed any thoughts of what his might say during his speech after receiving the “Most Awesome Scootboard Ramp Jump Ever” award would be out of his mind. There would be plenty of time of that after he’d pushed off toward glory.
