“Mom,” said Jake. “Is it okay if I watch TV in your room for a while? Uncle Todd’s being weird in the living room.”

Naturally, Michelle couldn’t just let it go.

“Hey, hey! Michelle! You came in here just in time!” The living room was covered in loose leaf notebook paper, each one with a different scribble or blueprint or paragraph of notes. On the coffee table was a First Years Potty Seat. Michelle took a deep breath.

Todd held out his hands. “Before you get mad, let me explain. I’m working on my new invention.”

Michelle didn’t say anything.

“So, this First Years Potty Seat, right? It’s got three positions, right? Stand-alone, trainer, and the step-stool base.”

Michelle didn’t say anything.

“So, you know how comfortable the kids were, right? When they were learning? And how it makes using the toilet so much less intimidating? And how it made it so easy, they could pick it up super-fast?”

Michelle didn’t say anything.

“Well, I was figuring that-“

Michelle held up her hand. “Todd, before you say a word, let me make it clear. If any part of your explanation uses the words “It’s for when I’m drunk” I’m going to pack your suitcase and set it on the lawn.”

Todd didn’t say anything. Michelle nodded.

Todd sighed. “I’ll put the First Years Potty Seat back where I found it, Michelle.”

“And don’t forget the papers.”
