Danielle had been dodging her mom’s phone calls for the last couple weeks, and figured it was about time she gave her a call to let her know she was still alive.

“Hey Mom. How are you?”

“Dani! It’s good to hear from you. I was starting to worry. I’m good. What’s new in your world?”

“Oh, you know. Not much. Still working at the library. Got a new humidifier because this dry heat is killing my sinuses. Phil moved back in … you know, the usual.”

Danielle braced herself for the 20 questions.

“That’s nice, dear. Did you get the Vornado Evap 2 like I was telling you about?”

“Uh …” That wasn’t exactly the first thing Danielle had expected her mother to ask.

“The one with the deep, pitched blades that pull large volumes of harsh, dry air through the Vornado’s signature Vortex Action and then circulate the humidified air throughout the room?”

“Yeah. That one.”

“Oh good. You were always prone to nosebleeds, even as a little kid. I’m glad you found something that will humidify your entire apartment. It’s about 600 square feet, right?”

“Yeah, mom. Something like that. Listen …”

“I thought you would like that model because of the three fan speeds, High, Low or Auto. Which setting do you think you use most?”

“Mom, I don’t know. Auto, I guess, since it just fluctuates up or down to maintain the set humidity level. So, aren’t you going to say anything about Phil?”

“Well, what’s there to say? I like Phil. Always have. I knew it was just a matter of time before you two kids got back together.”

“You did?”

“Sure. But what ever happened with that Craig guy you were telling me about?”

Danielle sighed. “Things just didn’t work out.”

“Oh? Why not, Sweetie?”

“So, you know how when I broke my ankle and Phil was taking care of me and Craig came over and got jealous and they got in a fight and I made them both leave?”

“Yeah, I remember.”

“Well, what I didn’t tell you is that I went over to his place the next day to talk to him about it, and I saw him getting into a car with some blonde girl.”

“Oh, I see.”

“Some really cute, bubbly little blonde bimbo.”

“Dani, that’s not a nice thing to say.”

“Well you should have seen the way she was fawning all over him. She was all, ‘Oh Craigy Bear! I missed you soooo much!’ and then she ran up and jumped in his arms and wrapped her legs around him.”

“Well, did you confront him about it?”

“No. I did what any stupid, jealous girl would do.”

“What’s that?”

“I dumped him first and was really mean to him.”

“Makes sense.”
