Best security system on the market? Depends who you ask. Best security system at this price? Now you’re getting it.

When you measure this Zmodo system against the Platonic ideal of what a security system should be, make sure you weigh the money you’ll be saving, too.

Does it have drawbacks, limitations, imperfections? You could say that. The night vision isn’t perfect. You need to provide your own VGA or composite-video monitor. The DVR doesn’t include a hard drive (although we can sell you one that does). If you’re head of security at Fort Knox, you might want to take your procurement order elsewhere.

But is this a ridiculously great price for 8 weatherproof cameras and a DVR that got good reviews all over the Internet when it was priced at over $ 400?

No question there either.

Wooters have had strong opinions on Zmodo systems in the past, but we’ll let this one comment sum it up: “You can do MUCH better with a dedicated linux box, ZoneMinder, and a cheap Chinese capture card. But then you’ll have to learn Linux… I replaced my ZoneMinder system with one of these, because I just couldn’t spend any more time futzing with it.”

Or, if we may paraphrase: “I could do better, but I bought one anyway because the price is great and it’s easy to use.” If you’re a whiz at Linux, or if money is no object, or if you’re expecting this system to keep death row inmates from breaking out, you probably don’t want it.
